The Norwegian Elkhound Dog Breed

The Norwegian Elkhound dog breed is from the Hound Dog Breed group (click here for more). They do not have a lot in common with other hounds except their hunting ability.

They have served humans for thousands of years, dating back to the time of the Vikings. They are a hardy breed capable of hunting elk, guard duty and even herding.

Size and Appearance

This medium to large dog stands 19 – 22 inches and weighs 35 to 60 pounds. Their coats are a double coat. The outer layer is straight and coarse, standing up at a medium length. They shed quite a lot.

They are usually grey with black tips (not the feet though) and a lighter color on the underside.

Personality and Temperament

This is a high energy dog that needs daily exercise. Without enough exercise they tend to dig or be destructive. They love to play and enjoy the company of their owners. They are good with strangers

Because of their thick coats they prefer cool weather and love to play in the snow.

Like most dogs, early training and socialization are important. One of the key reasons they need good training and socialization is that they tend to be reserved with other dogs. And they are stubborn and headstrong.

Active families with time to include the dog will enjoy having this breed in their home.

This is one of the Most Popular Dog Breeds (click here for more – leaving the Norwegian Elkhound page).
