Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world and is well known in popular culture as the Taco Bell Dog and another is the famous companion of Paris Hilton.

They are named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where they were discovered by American Tourists in the 1850’s. Despite this “discovery”, they date back hundreds, if not thousands of years. There is a theory that they originate in ancient Egypt.

They are very alert and energetic and move quickly with no sign of fear. They can be temperamental dogs that have a terrier like attitude. They are popular for their small size, and attachment to their owners. This attachment can be a problem as they may be overly protective of their owner. This can be overcome with good socialization starting at an early age. With training and socialization they can be a great companion.

Their small size makes them a popular among those living in smaller homes or apartments and those who are not overly active. They are not well suited for homes with young children as they have been known to bite when threatened.

This dog breed has long or short coats; have large, erect ears; weigh 2-10 pounds (1-5kg) (but must be under 6pounds for AKC showing); stand 6-10 inches (15-25 cm.); have a sickle shaped tail; and large eyes
