The Borzois Dog Breed

The Borzois, also called the Russian Wolfhound, is among the Most Popular Dog Breeds.

It was bred in Russia to help hunt wolves and it gained popularity in Europe after being imported to the United Kingdom. It was owned by Russian Aristocracy for centuries, especially when wolf hunting was a sport.

Size and Appearance

They stand 27 to 29 inches (68-74 cm) and weigh up to 105 pounds. So they are certainly a large dog breed.

They have a small, long narrow head with small folded ears and a gentle expression. They have a deep chest but overall have a thin frame that suggests good speed.

Their coats come in all colors and are long and silky. They can be flat, wavy or even curly.

Personality and Temperament

This is a brave dog with a sensitive side. They are very content if they have enough exercise. They do well as a partner for someone who enjoys running. And they do not need a big space so long as they have plenty of exercise.

They are a watchful dog but do not bark very much. They can be a bit aloof and reserved with strangers and other pets. And they are a bit more difficult to train than average. Early obedience training and socialization is a good idea. Keep in mind that they are sensitive so be gentle in training.

They love to run so it is best to keep them on a leash when they are out of a fenced area. They will not care about traffic if they see a small animal to chase.

The Borzois is from Hound Dog Breed group.
