The Shetland Sheepdog comes from the Shetland Islands off the north coast of Scotland. They are considered a Herding Dog Breed by the American Kennel Club. They are related to the collie breeds.

Size and Appearance

It really is an attractive breed. One of the great features is an abundant, longhaired coat. This longhaired coat features a mane and frill. The coat colors commonly come in sable, tricolor, blue merle, black and white, as well as black and tan. And because their coats are so long and thick they require a lot of brushing and grooming.

Personality and Attitude

They are easily trained, excel with obedience training, and are eager to please their owners. They show great affection towards their owners and can be wary of strangers. They tend to bark a lot.

They can be a good family pet since they are gentle, bright and affectionate.
