The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier dog breed

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier dog breed was developed to be a farm dog in Ireland. Like other Terrier Dog Breeds they had the task of hunting vermin. Farmers also found that they made good herding dogs and guard dogs.

Size and Appearance

The Wheaten is a medium sized dog breed standing 18 – 20 inches (46-50 cm) and weighing 30 – 40 pounds. They have long coats that are quite soft and silky. Generally they need a lot of brushing and grooming because their long coats tend to pick up everything. The coats are always a wheaten color (hence the name!).

Personality and Temperament

This is a very affectionate breed of dog that is quite good with children. They love strangers and need to be taught not to jump up on them. And they are good with other pets.

Wheatens are a playful breed with average energy. They are a bit stubborn (like most Terriers) but are not terribly difficult to train (about average).

They are great jumpers and are quite curious. That combined with their hunting instinct makes them a constant danger for escaping from the back yard!

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is among the Most Popular Dog Breeds and will live for 12 -14 years
