Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is part of the Toy dog group

The ShihTzu is a breed that was developed thousands of years ago. They were palace and temple dogs and were bred for the sole purpose of being a companion and show piece. Chinese Royalty and other highly regarded citizens would be given one as a gift.

The Shih Tzu dog breed is known for its Oriental appearance and long flowing coat. Standing about 9-10 inches (23-27 Cm) and weighs 9-16 pounds (4-8kg) it is part of the toy dog breed group. Because of the length and density of its coat it requires daily grooming. They do not shed a lot so they are gaining popularity among allergy sufferers who would like a dog.

If you have allergies please spend time giving this some thought if this applies to you. Consult your allergy specialist for advice. It is sad when a dog has to be given up so please take your time in deciding if you have allergies.

This breed does well in urban or rural settings. They do carry an aura of royalty and importance. Their pride borders on arrogance at times. But they are full of life and enjoy human companionship

They do not need a lot of exercise – although it does enjoy a good walk. And they do quite well living in a small space like an apartment.

This breed is good for apartment dwellers or others that are not able to spend a great deal of time out doors with their pet. Seniors would find this breed to be a great companion and not too much of chore to look after.

They do have a longer than average life span of 14-18 years.
