The Pekingese Dog Breed

The Pekingese dog breed is of Chinese descent and has been called a “Lion dog” because it was bred to resemble a lion. They are also known as Pekes.

They are a part of the Toy dog breed group

Size and Appearance

The Peke stands 6 to 9 inches (15-23 cm) and weighs up to 14 pounds. They have a large head (compared to the overall size) and a flat face featuring large eyes. Their ears are large, heart shaped and covered in long fur.

They have a double coat and a mane. The outer coat is coarse and comes in all colors. They do require quite a bit of grooming.

They are an attractive showpiece dog.

Personality and Temperament

Pekes are a very low energy dog. They behave as if they are royalty, full of self confidence and somewhat aloof. They are stubborn and can be difficult to train. They do not require much exercise.

Some Pekes are more aloof than others, and some are quite affectionate and outoing

Overall they enjoy watching the goings on and do best in quieter homes.

The Pekingese are among the Most Popular Dog Breeds (click here for more).
