Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer was bred to work on the farms hunting vermin in and around the barns and other out buildings. They are high spirited dogs that are somewhat protective of their home. They will be reserved with strangers until they are assured by their human companions that the stranger is welcome. As such they make a great watch dog as well. They will be quite vocal towards strangers.
It is important that a terrier be socialized early or it will be too protective of its home as the years go on. This can lead to problems as protective behavior is usually not wanted. A well trained and socialized schnauzer, like most terriers, will be a delightful addition to any family.

They are considered to be good with children. Of course they need proper training and children should be taught proper handling and respect for the family dog.

Like other terriers they are active and feisty dogs. Therefore they do require a certain amount of play time and exercise or they will create their own “fun”. This could mean unwelcome destructive behavior around the home.

These Schnauzers have a distinct appearance. They have a harsh outer coat that appears wiry. They also have a long bushy beard, mustache and eyebrows. Their tails are small and skinny, or docked. They stand 12-14 inches tall and weigh 12-20 pounds
