The Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed

The Irish Wolfhound dog breed was used for centuries in Ireland to hunt wolves, boar and elk. They date back to Roman times.

Size and Appearance

This is a very large dog weighing over 100 pounds and standing 32 to 34 inches (81-86 cm). They are among the tallest of all dogs.

They have a friendly face with a long head and muzzle as well as small folded ears. Their tail is carried low with a sweep up at the end.

Overall they appear quite strong with a deep chest, strong legs and large feet. Their medium length fur is rough to touch and comes in a variety of colors including gray, brindle, red, black, tan, white or fawn.

Personality and Temperament

Despite its size it is rarely a dominant dog. They can be stubborn and more difficult to train. But overall they are gentle and easy going with a fairly low energy level. They are playful and affectionate and enjoy a daily walk. They are pretty good with children, strangers and other pets if socialized and trained well early on.

They do need companionship and do not do well if they are alone more than they are with their owners.

Irish Wolfhound is from Hound Dog Breed group (click here for more). And they are one of the Most Popular Dog Breeds.
