Chow Chow Dog Breed

The Chow Chow is a Chinese Dog Breed that has been around for thousands of years. The breed was brought to England hundreds of years ago and to North America around 1900. They are class as a Non Sporting Dog Breed in the American Kennel Club

The Chow is best suited for an owner who is able to be firm, consistent, and already experienced with dogs. A chow and young children is probably not the best fit. So think twice about its temperament if you have children.

Attitude and Personality

They are stubborn and reserved dogs that can be difficult to train and socialize. This comes from their original upbringing as a guard and as a hunter. So they can be serious and suspicious protector of their homes.

They tend to be loyal to just one, or maybe two people.

Overall, this is a lower energy dog that just needs a short walk each day (unless the weather is too hot).

Size and Appearance

This is an attractive breed of dog with a thick coat that comes in many different colors. They have compact faces, a thick mane, and a thick tail that stands up high over the back.

Chows are a larger breed of dog standing 18-22 inches (46-56cm) and weighing 55 – 60 pounds. They have thick coats that protect them from cold harsh weather. They shed quite a bit and can be difficult to groom.

This is one of the most popular breeds of dog (click here for more). If you want to adopt a pet Chow then please consider a Chow Chow Dog Rescue

This breed of dog will live for 8 to 12 years.
