Chesapeake Bay Retriever Dog Breed

Is the Chesapeake Bay Retriever the right breed of dog for you? This breed of dog was bred in Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. They were popular for their capability of swimming through frigid waters to retrieve ducks.

This is a breed that is well suited as a companion for an outdoorsman. They love being outdoors and really enjoy a chance to go swimming. This is much like other Hunting Dog Breeds

They are also referred to as Chessie’s

Personality and Attitude

This is the most protective and tough of the retriever breeds. As such it is reserved towards strangers and can be reserved towards other dogs or animals.

They are obedient dogs that are quite affectionate towards their owners. They love being active outdoors and will be rather calm indoors after a good time outside (like after a hike for example).

To best enjoy this type of retriever it is important to give it regular exercise, good training and socialization.

Size and appearance

The Chessie is a larger dog standing at 22 to 26 inches and weighing 55 to 80 pounds. They have thick coats , the outer coat is harsh and the undercoat is wooly. The coat is usually a brown or “deadgrass” color. A distinguishing feature of this breed is their webbed feet that make them great swimmers

A well cared for Chessie will live 10-14 years.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is among the Most Popular Dog Breeds

If you are considering a Chessie please consider a Chesapeake Rescue
