The Canaan Dog Breed

The Canaan Dog Breed is a breed that is thousands of years old from Israel. They have worked as guards and livestock herders. In more recent years (decades) they have worked for the Israeli army as sentry dogs, messenger dogs and mine detector dogs

Size and Appearance

This breed is a medium sized dog standing 19-24 inches (48-60cm) and weigh 35-55 pounds. They have an athletic, thin build with a straight harsh coat. Their coats are usually white with some dark color or they are a solid color (sandy, red brown, black or white).

They have erect ears set low on their head and they have a slightly rounded tip. Their eyes are an almond shape.

Personality and Temperament

This is a very dependable and trainable dog. They excel at obedience and are quite eager to please their owners. They work well as herding dogs.

They have a medium to high energy level and require exercise and mental stimulation. They are affectionate and playful and make a good household pet. They can be protective of the family and require socialization so that they are not aggressive towards other dogs (they are generally friendly) and not too suspicious of visitors.

This breed is like many other herding dogs and enjoys a 12 year lifespan.
