The Airedale Terrier Dog Breed

The Airedale Terrier Dog Breed was originally bred for hunting otters and badgers. They are very good around water and have a good sense of smell.

In addition to hunting the pesky badgers and otters, Airedales have also been used as a police dog. And they have become a very popular family pet. Keep reading to see why!

Size and Appearance

This is a very distinctive breed of dog. Standing at 22-24 inches tall and weighing up to 60 pounds, this is the largest of the Terrier Dog Breeds.

From the front they appear very thin. Their head is long and narrow and so is their body. They have a long and flat head that features small eyes and v shaped ears that fold forward. From the side you can see that they are a powerful, solid dog breed. Their legs are long and fairly thick. And they carry their tail high.

They are usually a mix of black and tan in color and their coat is rough, wiry and of a medium length. This coat requires quite a bit of grooming. The great news is that they shed very little.

Personality and Temperament

I have heard owners of this Terrier breed say that they are goofy, outgoing and friendly. Overall this is a playful and energetic dog that has bit of a stubborn streak. They are of average difficulty to train. The earlier you start training and socializing the better your results will be. And if you take the dog for a long walk daily and mix in a good play session then you can expect a well behaved dog that will fit in well with an active household.

They are good with children, especially older ones who will play with the dog. All children need to be taught proper behavior around the family dog and vice versa.

They are independent dogs but do well with other pets if they are introduced early and often. And they are not afraid to use their bark to protect the home.
